September 25 – Day 19: All Caught Up

I have to admit that, as far behind as I was, it’s kind of strange to be again writing on the actual day things happened.

Unfortunately, not much did happen.

It’s been warm and humid all day, alternating rain and conditions that just make it lousy to be outside. Though there are occasional breezes, it’s currently 71 with 98% humidity, and a forecast of more of the same for the near future (in fact, Wednesday’s high is supposed to be 82).

We’re back at the bar for most of this week (a week from today, we’re in the theatre; three days later, we preview), so it was a sure thing I was going to take the subway uptown. I could have walked, but it would have been 90 minutes in crappy weather, so I said “nope.” On my way, I stopped off to get a bagel (which I ate once I got to the bar), then to 14th Street to catch the L to Union Square. My app told me to take the 6 from there, but the 4 was in the station, so I opted for that, even if it takes a little longer and the station is farther from the bar.

The plan at rehearsal—other than to be off-book—was to work stuff in preparation for our designer run-through on Thursday, but there were enough to work on that we got to only page 22 or so, toward the end of my second scene. I kind of wish we had another week (I usually do), but it would have been pretty expensive. The cast is good enough to get where they need to, but it would have been nice for them to get more familiar with the material. I’m lucky in that I’ve already had a crack at it. If I were given only two weeks to do this, I probably would have felt like I was missing something. Guess we’ll never know.

Anyway, while we worked a lot of stuff, we also sat around a lot (except Gabriel, who never gets any time off-stage)—which is inevitable, given how people come into and out of this script so quickly—but I think everyone was prepared for that and was probably glad to get the time to look over their lines some more. (I know I was.) Really, the most unusual part of the day was the rain. For an hour or so after we got there, it was of Biblical proportions; I mean, California would trade a lot for just that hour. Probably would have ended the drought right there.

We broke at 6:00, and my plan was to take the subway to Union Square and hit Trader Joe’s. Eric from the cast remarked on my bravery at going there at 6:30 on a weeknight. Even though it had been a zoo when I was there last year, I figured how bad could it be?

It was worse.

I got almost everything I needed (forgot the peanut butter until I was in line, and I was damned if I was going to start that process again), but it’s like being on the subway. Too many people, too many carts, too much confusion. I get the feeling that they could make the place twice as big and the problem would still exist. It’s about as bad as the Whole Foods down the block, but over there, it’s two floors of confusion; Joe’s is only one.

 This seems pretty typical.

It was raining a little when I left the store, but not enough to use the umbrella I’d had to use leaving the bar. I walked down to St. Marks and stopped into Bua for a quick—and refreshing—beer, then came home, made a roast beef sandwich, and watched some stuff I’d DVRed before the Dodger game came on. When I’m not in New York, I forget how inconvenient sports are. It’s currently 11:20, and the game is in the 6th inning, which means probably another hour or more, which means if I want to watch Colbert or The Daily Show, I have to either miss the game or DVR the other shows and stay up later than I’d like to on a school night. #FirstWorldProblems

As it is, I intend to post this, look at my lines, and read some of the newspapers that have been piling up the last few days.
